This week's challenge "Decade Decadence", sponsored by Akzentz is all about our favorite decade. I was an 80's baby so I knew right away I needed to bring the 80's back. The 80's were all about bright and bold colors and that's what always keeps in the 80's state of mind. Being a kid in the 80's I wanted to bring something to life that I relate the 80's to. I thought it would be fun to share some of the toys I played with and my favorite Saturday morning cartoons. I was all about Rainbow Brite, The Carebears, and of course the iconic smell of my Strawberry Shortcake dolls. There's nothing like the smell of a brand new Shortcake doll.
The Rainbow Brite Sprite was my favorite piece to create. I had one just like him, only a little bigger. I really wanted to give him a furry body and after a couple of trial and errors with yarn I ended up talking my daughter out of one of her stuffed animals to use. Miss Kitty made a great sacrifice for the sake of art, she will be rewarded in the Island of Misfit Toys. I have him sliding down a rainbow with a little star guy from the Carebears shooting along side him. Berry and Rainbow are greeting you with a wave while Bedtime bear is off dreaming in the stars.
This challenge being all gel was probably my biggest challenge yet as I haven't ever worked with gel before. I had a lot of fun with it though and learned a lot along with the way.
I loved creating this set and bringing back sweet memories of playing with my dolls and getting up early on Saturday morning to watch my favorite cartoons. They say it about every decade I suppose but it's true what they say "They just don't make them like they used to".

The top piece of background I chose to do a nice sky. I started with black gel polish and then sponged on purple and blue gel polishes. Once cured I added several different pigments including a chameleon chrome and a silver holographic micro glitter. Sealed with gel top coat.

\nThe rainbow started with a white gel base and the colors were painted on with acrylic paints and sealed with gel top coat.

Mr. Sprite is my favorite part of this whole set. His bones started out with a ball of play doh covered in gel and cured. I then took the foot of a stuffed animal and cut and sewed it like a little sock to fit over the "bones". His antennas are made from a piece in a jewelry making kit, I put them through the seam of the fur and stabilized them with a small dot of gel. His legs, arms and face are made entirely of gel and painted with acrylic paints and gel polishes. For the shoes I formed small balls of playdoh and covered in it gel. HIs belt and star antennas are made from gel polish.

Mr. Star was formed with play doh and covered in gel. The spring is from the inside of a click ink pen and stabilized with gel. He was painted with acrylic paints and his cheeks are rosy with eye shadows.

Bedtime bear and the moon were created as two separate pieces. They started out as a single flat silhouette of hard gel and then I built them up to be more 3 dimensional. After shaping them and smoothing out the edges they were painted with acrylic paints and then glued together.

As with Bedtime bear and the moon I began with a flat silhouette and built her features up to be 3 dimensional, she was painted with a mix of gel polishes and acrylic paints. Her hair is real acrylic yarn. I slightly melted the ends to keep it from fraying and glued it to the back with nail glue.

The berry that strawberry is holding was formed with play doh covered in hard gel. Once I shaped and smoothed it out the color and details were done using gel polish and then covered in wipe free top coat.

Rainbow Brite's body was made exactly like Strawberry Shortcake's. Her hair however was created in 4 d spirals. I covered an orange wood stick with play doh and cuticle oil and spiraled hard gel around it and cured. I made several different sizes and adhered them together to small dots of hard gel. Her bow is made from gel polish and looped together.
