Drop Dead Gorgeous: Sponsored by Swarovski Crystals

Day of the Dead is one of the holidays that I look forward to all year. This celebration begins on October 31st and ends November 2nd, and on this special day, our deceased relatives have the opportunity to visit the living. My art piece is dedicated to my grandma, who played such an extremely important role in my life. Since her passing I started setting up an altar every Day of the Dead celebration. My grandma really looks like "Mama Coco" in the famous Disney movie "Coco." This movie along with other pictures served as an inspiration for my mural.

Since my mural is dedicated to my grandma, I decided to draw her in the center and beside her some beautiful colorful sugar skulls. The flowers in my mural are the three main colors of flowers used in altars. A "Cempasuchil," or marigold, guides the spirits to the altar with its gorgeous vibrant orange color and smell. The white flower represents the sky; and the purple flower is the mourning praise and helps keep the bad spirits away. The candles are used to light the way of our relatives to their homes. My grandma was a very religious person, and always had a cross necklace which I also included. The cross represents the four cardinal points that also help guide the spirits. To finish up my design I added colorful Mexican embroidery and Swarovski crystals to give everything a pop.

Working on this project really touched my heart; I caught myself crying so many times as I was completing it.To me, it was such an honor to create this mural and dedicate it to my beloved Grandma Zenaida whom I love and miss so much. I hope you all enjoy my mural. Thank you.

I fist started by searching Dia De Los Muertos photos. My inspiration came from the flowers used in the celebration, items placed on the altar and of course their beautiful colors.

I first began by gluing my five tips together and then buffed to remove the shine. Next, I cleaned my tips with an lint free wipe to remove any debris on the surface.

I then added highlight and shading to the face, my grandma's features and I couldn't forget her glasses. All with acrylic paints.

I then added her gray hair, and braids. Also used, black acrylic paint to carve out her face since i did it pretty chubby in the beginning.

I then filled in the sugar skull with white acrylic paint, let it dry and added a second coat. Next, I outlined my purple flower with pink, and a lilac color next to blend the flower and add dimension.

I added a darker purple acrylic paint towards the center of the flower, while still wet, I outlined with the lilac purple and blended the two together. I also added the eyes, nose, and mouth to my sugar skull along with some colorful detailing.

Using my handy Crystal Katana, and resin I filled my mural with vibrant colored rhinestones and pixie. I also added some black strands to my Grandma's hair to add dimension, and iridescent glitter to represent her silky, shiny hair. I finished with a matte top coat on my entire design, and just added regular top coat to her glasses for the glare.
