When I got my Sunset Strip challenge I had to study the subject. I watched a couple of documentaries of the Strip and fell in love with a famous hotel; Chateau Marmont. I love the smoky vibes of the 30's and I always feel at home in old buildings. Chateau Marmont has housed multiple wild artists since the 30's and there is a saying: "If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont." It certainly feels like a place for me.
Step-by-Step Nail Art Tutorial
1
I wanted to use calm and hotel-like colors. I took my inspiration from vintage photos of the hotel, movies, pictures of hotel's objects and Chateau Marmont's personalized stationery.
2
Some of the hotel's rooms include beautiful marble fireplaces with carvings in them. To create the marble look you need to dab beige gel polish on the nail with cellophane and then cure. Add thin stripes of black gel polish and touch it with acetone so that it spreads on the nail. Add a top coat. Then layer eggshell colored gel polish 2-3 times with the same ornament pattern. Swipe the nail with rubbing alcohol and add a matte finish top coat.
3
Chateau Marmont's entrance sign is also made with multiple layers of gel polish.
4
I saw a beautiful picture of the hotel's door handle sign and a tassel, so I once again layered gel polish to create the sign and covered it with matte top coat. I made the tassel from a piece of an earring and some cotton string. I hand painted a picture of the Hotel Marmont's stationery on one nail with gel polish.
5
Hotels always make me think of maids and their\tfeather dusters, so I encapsulated feathers with clear top coat.
7
The hotel's key chains were a beautiful shade of army green. I hand painted one on the nail.
8
The ombre gray background is made using a makeup sponge, dabbing the color so it fades. Palm trees are hand painted.
