Although I wasn't around for during the 80's I've always found inspiration in the clothes. As tacky as they were, I still love em. I decided to go with a fashion inspired nail since it's very true to my aesthetic. I particularly love Madonna's style because Im a sucker for anything with lace and bows. Heres my Madonna inspired nail!
Step-by-Step Nail Art Tutorial
1
This is the lace fabric I used as a reference.
2
Using a calligraphy pen and watered down black acrylic paint start by marking in your basic flower shapes. Once your shapes are down, fill them in with a crosshatching technique.
3
Continue to fill in the rest of the flowers. Make your lines closer together and overlap in some areas to create depth.
4
To create the netting draw a squiggly line horizontally across the nail.
5
To finish the row, draw another squiggle on top to create the small circular shapes.
6
Continue the technique on the rest of the negative space until the lace design is complete.
7
Seal your design with a layer of your favorite top coat.
8
To create the bow I used colored acrylic powder. I went with a bright neon color to further embody the 80s. Use a nail form and flatten a bead of acrylic. Make sure it is thin so it will be easy to mold. Use the lines on your form to ensure the sides are the same size. Once the the acrylic is almost dry, fold it in half to create one side of the bow. Repeat for the other side and use another bead in the middle to connect the 2 pieces.
9
Using the colored acrylics again, sculpt the tails to the bow. Make them twist and turn any way you like.
10
Use glue or clear acrylic to attach your 3D pieces and add some topcoat to give it a shine!
