After receiving this Vintage Couture challenge from Akzentz, it took me no time at all to decide to reference my favorite outfits from the movie My Fair Lady.
I chose to recreate the iconic hat worn by Audrey Hepburn in the horse race scene, and loved the idea of having my nail wear a huge hat! To fully reference this outfit I also recreated the bow on her dress. I painted the base of these nails with lace gel, and used a sugaring technique over a handpainted lace pattern. I kept this pattern simple to not detract from the hat and bow, but to be just enough to add texture. I then added a black contrasting nail to be slightly less exquisite and to represent everyone else around her during this scene of the movie.
I also really love the gown which she wears to the embassy ball. It's sleek, sparkly and extremely elegant so I chose to create nails that could be worn with this gown rather than recreate it. I used the silver pearlescent chrome over white to add the extra shine, and then neatly embellished these nails with Swarovski crystals, pearls, and Japanese studs/beads. To tie the whole set together, I embellished the other nails with these same materials.

Bow Nail: > Create the elements of the bow by mixing gel art powder with black gel paint. To add the bend to each piece sculpt into shape over a curved form and cure. Add stripes with white gel paint, and top coat each piece with Matte-On. > Paint the nail with a coat of lace gel. Top coat with Shine-On. > To add texture, paint a lace design using white gel paint, sprinkle with gel art powder and cure. > Attatch the bow into shape with resin. > Embellish using feathers, ruffles, Swarovski crystals, pearls and beads.

Contrast Nail: > Paint the nail with black gel paint, then apply a single coat of white lace gel. Top with Shine-On. > Attach ruffles and feathers. > Sculpt a rose using red acrylic and apply. > Finish embellishing by using Swarovski crystals, pearls, and beads.

Hat Nail: > To add the brim of the hat, trim and shape a half-well nail tip down to size. To seamlessly attach this piece onto the nail apply with fiberglass resin. Paint the top portion of the hat with white gel paint, and outline the rim with black gel paint. > Like the thumb nail, sculpt two bow elements by combining black gel paint with gel art powder over a curved nail form. Detail one of the elements with stripes using white gel paint. Top with Matte-On. Overlap them and apply to the nail. > Apply ruffles and feathers. > Sculpt two roses using red acrylic, and attach them to the top of the hat. > Paint the base of the nail with a single coat of White Lace Gel and top with Shine-On. > Paint lace design with white gel paint, cover with gel art powder and cure. > Add Swarovski crystals, pearls, and beads to the top of the hat.

Embassy Ball Nails: > Paint the nails with white gel paint and a chrome base coat (or just Akzentz White-On). > Coat with Pearlescent Silver. > Top with Shine-On. > Arrange embellishments to your liking, and then apply.
