I have been asked to create Day of the Dead themed nail art mural on a 5 nail tip.
30% of the design has been crystal encrusted sponsored by Swarovski and Crystal Katana.
The entire design has been hand-painted by gel.
I found inspiration in typically used symbols such as sugar skulls, colourful flowers and Monarch butterflies (there is a belief that they hold the spirits of the departed).
Step-by-Step Nail Art Tutorial
1
After preparing tips, I have drown a scheme by pencil. Then I have used white gel to paint the marked places on the tips (butterflies and skulls) and beige gel for the face.
2
FACE: I have painted the eyes in white, then added blue dots with a black one in the middle lined with black. Then I have added shadows and eye lines. After finishing this, I have sketched a nose and lips. The nose is black, and the lips are pink with black line. I have circled the eyes with purple, lined them with black, put some shadows, and finally added eye lashes. I have used black lines between lips to define cheek bones and painted them purple. I have painted chin and forehead, adding stitches over the lips. At the end I have painted lips red, shaded them, put some shadows on the entire face. And last, I have painted some lines on the face for the final look.
3
BUTTERFLIES:I have colored them yellow and orange, blended in between to get the ombre effect, lined them black and added tiny black lines over.
4
ROSES: I have used coral as base, then added white shadows, gently lined them black with final black shadows.
5
PINK FLOWER: I have schemed it in black and added colors (pink, purple, yellow), blended them slightly. I have repeated the entire procedure to enhance the color. Then I have added a tuck, and lined the flower black again.
6
FLOWERS UNDER SKULLS: I have painted 2 same flowers, first petals are dark and light blue, and second are dark and light yellow. I have lined them black, adding some shadows ( darker for inner petals, and lighter for outer petals).
7
SKELETON HAND: I have painted hand bones white with some yellow, lined them black, and finally added some shadows.
8
SKULLS: I have lined the bigger skull black, added nose and jaw, and finally added design. I have shaded eyes and nose on the smaller skull.
9
BACKGROUND AND HAIR: I have decided to connect the entire design with green, with lighter one one the end. I have also used the same color for hair. I have used some transparent white and transparent black for tresses. I have painted black and white lines over to enhance the tress shapes. Everything unpainted I have colored black.

The design is finished, tips are covered with top coat, and ready for placing Swarovski crystals. I have used Crystal Katana for placing crystals.
